An interesting article from the weekends press appeared in the Sunday Times and discussed the development of regional accents. It appears that we are in a period of rapid change in the way in which people speak to each other. Accents which are spreading there usage are Geordie expanding northward towards the Borders southward into Tees-side and westward into Cumbria, Brummie which is spreading towards the border with Wales, and Estuary English or Mockney which derived from Cockney and is spreading into East Anglia and towards the South West. It is suspected that these trends are part driven by the cult of celebrity with Cheryl Cole and Ant and Dec promoting Geordie and Adrian Chiles and Lenny Henry flying the flag for Brummie. It would appear also that the Cockney accent its self is being replaced in East London by Jafaican a mixture of influences coming together and reflecting the new multicultural nature of that area.
The one thing that is sure is that Uncle Albert will continue to talk with a Yorkshire Accent and Ray the man responsible for cooking our Scratchings will always speak Brummie.
