Uncle Alberts supports Wortley Rugby Union Football Club, the local community orientated club who are keen on promoting rugby football in the largely soccer dominated area of north Sheffield and west Barnsley.
The club was born after a conversation between Uncle Alberts C.E.O Brian Morrisey and Mick O'Toole who had both spent many years driving their respective sons Alex and John around Yorkshire playing Rugby for Barnsley RUFC mini juniors. Brian and Mick organised a charity match involving mainly parents from St Marys Primary school at High Green or their friends. The first such event occured on the 31st of December 1996 and the tradition has carried on ever since.
A particularly enthusiastic turn out occured in 2002 and after that game there was much talk of creating a team and playing regular fixtures thus on Friday the 16th of May 2003 a commitee was formed and a constitution was written in the upstairs function room of the Wortley Arms pub.
The club continues to grow from strengh to strengh with the formation of a Mini Junior section training Sundays 11.00am-12.30pm and with Uncle Alberts and other sponsors supporting the constant efforts being made to improve the facilities and other aspects of the club it looks like there is a bright future for Wortley Rugby Club.
Wortley Rugby Club has recently been awarded the enhanced community support package by the Rugby Football Union's Rugby Force initiative. The grant of £5000 will help improve general facilities and ensure that the club has a role in the local community for years to come. The Rugby Force weekend takes place on the 11th and 12th of June 2011 with World Cup winner Jason Leonard and England and Stade Francais star Tom Palmer visiting the club to lend a hand.
